 I have long been mesmerized by Saint Marcus Martyr, who was beheaded in the Roman catacombs for being Catholic, was martyred in Rome in 286 (under emperor Diocletian’s rule), and was taken to Mateus on a notoriously adventurous journey in 1705, by m

I have long been mesmerized by Saint Marcus Martyr, who was beheaded in the Roman catacombs for being Catholic, was martyred in Rome in 286 (under emperor Diocletian’s rule), and was taken to Mateus on a notoriously adventurous journey in 1705, by my 9th grandfather’s uncle Diogo Alvares Mourão. For 319 years now his body relic has laid at Mateus Chapel, dressed in a gold military fantasia costume. Martyrs were believed to be the connection between the living and the dead. I like to think of him as The Eternal Sitter.
